World-class fly fishing, hiking, and more!
Fly Fishing
Lots of folks visit us specifically for the spectacular Montana fly fishing opportunities that abound around our guest ranch. Located at the confluence of the Taylor Fork and Gallatin Rivers, fly fishing at Covered Wagon Ranch is world class! There’s over 120 miles of blue-ribbon water in the Gallatin Canyon alone, plus all the legendary waters of Yellowstone National Park, the famed Madison River and the Henry’s Fork. Within these beautiful clear streams, you have a chance to see (and catch) plentiful rainbows, browns and native cutthroat trout. You are welcome to fish on your own from the ranch. We have some equipment to borrow but it’s limited. Experience fishermen are going to want to bring their own gear or rent. Guided services into Yellowstone are available with the guided rate and guided services on the Gallatin River are available off ranch upon request.

Water Fun & Hiking
Water Fun– If the temperature permits, go for a ‘refreshing’ dip in the Taylor Fork Creek right here on the ranch. We recommend this be done after the river/creek lowers so usually in July/August. You can also take a relaxing dip in one of our many natural hot springs that are within 1-2 hours from the ranch to soothe your muscles after a day’s ride. There’s also swimming/wading in the Taylor Fork creek or floating (on your own) down the Gallatin River. If you’re looking for Montana whitewater rafting, we can help set you up with that too (off ranch activity).
Hiking-For guests who prefer to explore Yellowstone’s beauty on foot, we also offer guided hiking adventures. Our hikes are led by knowledgeable guides who know the area’s trails, wildlife, history, and hidden gems, creating a safe and memorable experience for every ability level. To ensure a personalized experience, guided hikes are limited to 3–4 guests per guide, allowing plenty of opportunities to ask questions, take photos, and enjoy the surroundings at a relaxed pace. Hiking destinations and departure times are coordinated each morning during breakfast, when guests can discuss trail options with their guide based on weather, interests, and ability level. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely nature walk, breathtaking mountain views, or a more challenging backcountry adventure, we’ll help you experience Montana’s incredible wilderness in a way that’s both enjoyable and unforgettable.

Montana Whitewater Rafting
Take an afternoon off from your riding, and enjoy thrilling Montana white water rafting on the Gallatin River. Early in the year (June and July) these trips will get the adrenaline pumping as the rivers are full of our snow melt. August and September trips, although still exciting, bring a little more leisure to the trip. Either way, this is a great way to add to your Montana getaway experience. We can help you schedule a rafting trip with one of the outfitters just a few miles from the ranch. This is an off-ranch activity and not included in your stay.

What our Guests Have to Say:
Great Family Vacation If you are looking for a great rustic outdoor family vacation, Covered Wagon Ranch is it… We wanted a trip where we did not have to drive everywhere, or worry about what we were going to do for dinner everyday. CWR was the perfect fit and allowed us to get the most adventure out of every day… The trail rides were rugged and scenic but geared towards any riders experience level. Food was great, and so was the service, with every meal meeting in the lodge and visiting with other families sharing the days Trail riding stories. When we were not riding we did some nice hikes including Lava Lake which was well worth the uphill pain it took to get there. Great fishing on the ranch in Taylor Fork and the Gallatin River. We caught nice Brown and Rainbow trout. Swimming, tubing, or hanging out in the rec room. My kids are still talking about Kurt teaching them how to Lasso. My youngest boy says he is better than Kurt now. Pretty sure he is not. We went to Yellowstone one day to give our Butts a rest and mix things up. They made sure they had dinner for us when we returned to the ranch late… All the staff went above and beyond providing service and making sure our stay was top notch. Kurt and Melissa were always accessible and constantly were checking to make sure we were enjoying our stay. Thanks again for an Overall great vacation experience, and we plan on returning next summer!
